The secret behind saving big on high quality fencing
Instead of showing a fence estimator where YOU want your fence, what if you can do this part yourself? Diagram, measure, and plan on paper yourself. You can save up to 50% on your fencing project. By following these simple steps you too can capitalize on the ever growing trend of separating the purchase of your fence from the installation cost.
Step 1
Create a diagram of your project.
This will allow you to make a materials list. Include the measurements between all starts and stops. Since aluminum and vinyl fences are “systems” you will need to identify your post type. The majority of vinyl fence styles have 8-foot wide sections (aluminum fence styles are 6 feet wide). The example below would be for vinyl fence and the materials list will be the same for most styles. With this generic list complete YOU are now in control of your shopping process!
Pen, paper, and tape measure!

Step 2
Select your style, height, and color.
A couple noteworthy points are; most privacy fences are 6 feet high and the majority of pool, kid, and dog fences are 4 feet high. There are many colors and styles available. The photo below shows the most popular fence of each type in the United States today.
Insider tip: Aluminum fences are much easier to install (smaller holes, lighter materials, assembled panels)!

Step 3
Shop.
Whether shopping online, at a big box store, or at a local fence retailer you now can take your list and request a materials project quote. In addition to price you will be looking for a reputable manufacturer with a lifetime transferable and registrable warranty. Be careful of imported fences and manufacturers that have not been in business for more than 10 years. Compare prices for the entire system (materials list) and don’t forget to consider delivery costs.
Insider tip: The importance of working with a sales person that demonstrates the “heart” of a coach cannot be overstated. Will they be happy to answer your questions throughout the entire process?

Step 4
Get it in the driveway.
You've selected a complete system in the style, height, and color that you want. Fence sections, posts, gates, and caps have been ordered and delivered. You purchased exactly what YOU wanted and saved.
Insider tip: Check quantities and look for any damage upon delivery.
This is what control looks like.
Step 5
Now, let’s get it installed.
We find that there are 3 simple money saving options:
First, do it yourself! Not literally. Friends, family, or neighbors can lend a hand. Everyone will want to help if you rent an auger and the digging is easy! If you need motivation; the average labor cost is $100 per post. Imagine that you are putting a $100 bill in your pocket with every post you set. There are many “how to” videos on YouTube. Have fun!
There is a job for everyone!
A second installation option: if you have a regular landscaper or a handy man, ask them for a quote for labor. They can provide great value from someone you trust.
Another option is to hire a professional fence installer or company (or someone who works at one). If you purchased a pro-grade quality fence system, they will be more than happy to install your project.
Ultimately, you will save between 25 and 50% by DIY fence shopping. For some it will be about value, for others it is about staying within a limited budget. For even more it is just the pure satisfaction of the fruits of their labor as they will enjoy the fence for years to come!
Protecting what you love
Note: If you plan to build your own fence you MUST dial 811 a few days before you dig your first hole. This is a free service that will come to your property and mark all underground utilities. Have fun, be safe.
